Asafoetida, also called Devil's Dung in the folk tradition, is one of the most pungent and most powerful protective and crossing herbs in the African American Hoodoo tradition. Its smell is so strong and so unpleasant that it has been used for centuries to drive away evil spirits, hostile forces, and unwanted people. You burn a small amount and what should not be there leaves.

In Southern Hoodoo, asafoetida is also worked to keep law enforcement away, to cause confusion in the plans of enemies, and as a component of serious crossing and banishing preparations. It is not a background herb. When asafoetida is in a working you know it is there.

Historical Context: Referenced in Harry Middleton Hyatt's Hoodoo documentation and in numerous folk magic records from the American South. One of the oldest and most consistently documented protective and crossing herbs in the African American conjure tradition.

Used For: Driving away evil. Banishing hostile forces. Confusion work. Keeping troublemakers away. Crossing enemies.

How to Work It: Burn a very small amount on charcoal to clear and drive away. Work outdoors or with good ventilation. Use sparingly. The smell is powerful and persistent. Requires charcoal disc, sold separately.
